Women Empowerment in the Field of Self-Sufficiency Organization (WEFSO) is an active national nonprofit and non-governmental organization operating in the western region of Afghanistan, particularly in Herat, with a special focus on women’s rights and women’s empowerment.
This NGO works in several overarching areas, including entrepreneurship, human capacity building, agriculture, animal husbandry, fruit processing, health, education, and crafts. WEFSO adopts an integrated approach to development by combining livelihood support with social empowerment to ensure sustainable and long-term impact.
A core pillar of WEFSO’s work is economic empowerment, where women are supported through vocational training, small enterprise development, and market-oriented skills to achieve financial independence and self-reliance.
In the area of education and literacy, WEFSO provides structured learning opportunities aimed at improving basic literacy, professional skills, and awareness, enabling women and girls to actively participate in social and economic life.
WEFSO also implements legal support and rights awareness programs, equipping women with knowledge about their rights, access to justice mechanisms, and protection services. These efforts are closely linked with the organization’s work in gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, where awareness campaigns, community dialogues, and support initiatives contribute to safer and more protective environments for women.
Recognizing the importance of holistic well-being, WEFSO delivers health and wellness services, including community-based health education, psychosocial awareness, and preventive care initiatives aimed at improving the overall quality of life for women and their families.
