Herat Earthquake Response – Demonstrating Proven Humanitarian Capacity
The Herat Earthquake Response project was successfully implemented by the Women Empowerment in Self-Sufficiency Organization (WEFSO) with the support of UN Women, demonstrating the organization’s capacity to deliver timely and effective humanitarian interventions in emergency contexts.
Project Implementation
In response to the devastating earthquake in Herat, WEFSO rapidly mobilized and implemented a targeted field response in Zandajan District, in close coordination with OCHA and UN Women. The intervention focused on identifying urgent community needs and ensuring that vulnerable populations were effectively represented in the humanitarian response.
A key strength of the project was the active engagement of women and girls in field operations. Through structured assessments and direct community interaction, WEFSO ensured the collection of reliable, ground-level data to inform humanitarian actors.
Impact & Achievements
The project contributed to evidence-based decision-making by providing timely and accurate data to key humanitarian stakeholders, including OCHA and UN Women. It also demonstrated WEFSO’s operational readiness, coordination capacity, and ability to effectively respond in complex emergency environments.
Importantly, the initiative reinforced the role of women in frontline humanitarian action, highlighting their critical contribution to inclusive and effective disaster response. This experience further strengthened WEFSO’s position as a reliable partner capable of implementing donor-supported interventions and delivering measurable, impact-driven results.
